How to Migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify Without Losing SEO Rankings

Switching your ecommerce store from WooCommerce to Shopify is one of the best decisions you can make for long-term growth. Shopify is faster, more reliable, and significantly easier to manage. But without the right approach, a platform migration can cause your hard-earned search rankings to drop — sometimes dramatically.

The good news is that a well-planned migration preserves your SEO equity entirely. At Uprank, we’ve managed hundreds of Shopify migrations for ecommerce brands across the UK and beyond. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Why Migrations Can Hurt SEO (And How to Avoid It)

When you move to a new platform, several things can go wrong from an SEO perspective:

  • Your URLs change, and old links return 404 errors instead of redirecting properly
  • Metadata (titles, descriptions) gets lost or reset during the transfer
  • Internal linking structures break, confusing search engine crawlers
  • Page speed or Core Web Vitals regress on the new theme
  • Structured data (schema markup) is not carried over

Each of these is avoidable with proper preparation. Here’s how.

Step 1: Audit Your Existing WooCommerce Site Before You Move

Before touching anything, document the current state of your site. This gives you a benchmark to compare against after migration.

What to document:

A full crawl of all URLs (use Screaming Frog or Sitebulb)

Current rankings for your target keywords (use Google Search Console)

All existing 301 redirects already in place

Your top-performing pages by organic traffic

      All meta titles and descriptions

Structured data / schema markup in use

Backlink profile — particularly links to specific URLs that must be preserved

Step 2: Map Your Old URLs to New Shopify URLs

Shopify uses a different URL structure to WooCommerce. For example, a WooCommerce product at /product/blue-running-shoes becomes /products/blue-running-shoes in Shopify. Create a comprehensive redirect map in a spreadsheet — every old URL on the left, every new Shopify URL on the right. Pay special attention to:

  • Product pages
  • Category / collection pages
  • Blog posts
  • Any custom landing pages with backlinks

Step 3: Implement 301 Redirects in Shopify

Shopify has a built-in URL redirect tool under Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects. For large stores, bulk import redirects via CSV. Every changed URL must have a 301 redirect pointing to its new equivalent — this passes link equity to the new URL and is the single most important step in preserving rankings.

Pro tip: After launch, crawl your site again and fix any remaining 404 errors immediately

Step 4: Migrate Your Metadata

Meta titles and descriptions do not carry over automatically. Use Matrixify (formerly Excelify) to bulk import metadata via CSV, or re-enter manually. Ensure every product, collection, and blog page has a unique, keyword-rich title tag (50–60 characters) and meta description (120–158 characters).

Step 5: Submit Your New Sitemap to Google

Shopify automatically generates a sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Once live:

  1. Log into Google Search Console
  2. Remove the old sitemap if still listed
  3. Submit your new Shopify sitemap
  4. Monitor the Coverage report for indexing issues over the first 2–4 weeks

Step 6: Check Page Speed and Core Web Vitals

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor. Test your key pages using Google PageSpeed Insights after launch and aim for a score above 80 on mobile. At Uprank, our Shopify builds are optimised for speed from the ground up — so our clients typically see speed improvements, not regressions, after migration.

How Long Does It Take for Rankings to Recover?

With a correctly executed migration, disruption should be minimal. Minor fluctuations in the first 2–4 weeks are normal as Google re-crawls your site. Rankings typically stabilise within 4–6 weeks. If they don’t recover within 6–8 weeks, this usually points to missed redirects, metadata loss, or a crawlability issue — all diagnosable and fixable.
